Important Reminders for Parents

Please keep in mind these important points.

Cadets shall be dropped off NLT 1810 hrs (6:10 PM). Parents / Guardians MUST walk your cadet(s) to the Quarterdeck and sign your cadet in on the record of drop off log. Colours and Prayers begins promptly at 1815 hours.

Hammerhead Division shall be on board NLT 1805 hrs, reporting to their immediate supervisory officer.

What uniform does the cadet wear on a nightly basis?

Please refer to ROUTINE ORDERS.

At 166 NLCC John A. Hamilton we typically have 2 parades every training night.

  • Colours & Prayers
  • Sunset & Announcements

Colours & Prayers: The first parade of the night beginning at 1815 hrs. This is where the Canadian flag is ceremonially raised, attendance is taken, the cadets may be inspected and a march past occurs. Parents/Guardians are invited to stay and watch this parade.

Sunset & Announcements: is the final parade of the evening beginning at 2030 hrs. The Canadian flag is ceremonially lowered, announcements and presentations may occur, then the cadets are dismissed to go home (duty division excluded [see below]). Parents/Guardians are strongly encouraged to attend this parade.

Reminder for Parents and Guests: Parents and guests who remain for Colours and Sunset are kindly reminded that the deck is a place of ceremony and respect. Once the parade begins, all conversations and socializing must cease. Please remain quiet, attentive, and respectful throughout the proceedings as a sign of respect for naval tradition, our cadets, and the ceremony itself. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Between parades, unless invited to stay, we ask that parents/guardians leave the LHQ so that the cadets can continue their training night without distraction.

The cadets are responsible to bring their own water bottle (labeled with their name). The Bow Valley Branch of the Navy League of Canada will supply a LIGHT snack for the scheduled 15-minute Stand Easy between classes.

Sunset parade begins promptly at 2030 hrs and the cadets are usually dismissed by 2045 hrs. There are nightly announcements during Sunset and it is highly recommended that parents/guardians attend the final parade of the evening to hear the announcements.

Cadets should be picked up no later than 2055 hrs (8:55 PM). Parents/Guardians MUST come to the Quarterdeck to collect your cadet once you have signed your cadet out on the record of pick up log.

Duty Division assists in setting up and tearing down the parade square. Duty Division is a rotating schedule that can be found in the monthly ROUTINE ORDERS. These cadets are expected to help in these tasks and are only dismissed on the approval of the Officer of the Day.

We understand that things happen and your cadet may miss a training night. It is greatly appreciated should your cadet not be in attendance you must notify the ship's office by emailing adm166.jahamilton@gmail.com to advise of the absence.
